Complex Problem Solving

The rules for complex problem solving are different from other problem solving methods

Traditional problem solving methods assume the linear steps: define the problem, gather and analyze data, and identify solution. We’re also encouraged to identify root causes for our problems. But in complex problems you won’t find one single root cause.

Complex problems are generally understood to be:

  • Interconnected with teams, members of a team, partners, clients or customers, suppliers, bosses, employees, the weather, all influencing each other

  • Dynamic, in that conditions change over time

  • Uncertain, because key parts of the problem are novel or unknown to the problem solver

Complex problems can take many forms:

  • Culture change within an organization

  • Project management when the project team lacks complete control over time and budget management, or even deliverables

  • Building a high-performing team

  • Alignment around a significant goal

  • Burnout and employee retention

  • Creating lasting change in an organization with high turnover

  • Reconfiguring work to meet new priorities or contend with a shortage of resources
